Substitute Wayne Collins' late goal gave Fulham a dramatic win against battling Portsmouth.
Despite all their pressure, especially in a hectic final 15 minutes, it looked as if Fulham were destined not to score but Collins' close-range header a minute from time gave them their first win in six games and helped them into fourth place in Division One.
Portsmouth defended well with centre-backs Adrian Whitbread and Andy Awford under constant pressure.
Pompey's midfielders were pinned back in their own half for long periods, leaving striker Lee Bradbury to plough a lone furrow up front.
Yet for all their pressure Fulham scarcely tested goalkeeper Andy Petterson until the final ten minutes.
The Cottagers' lean spell has coincided with the absence of star strikers Geoff Horsfield and Paul Peschisolido.
In their place German International Karl-Heinz Riedle showed some quality touches and his on-loan partner Danny Cadamarteri offered bursts of speed but was off target with his shooting.
Portsmouth's first attack did not come until the 40th minute but they were more adventurous after the interval.
Fitzroy Simpson was put through by Steve Claridge but Fulham goalkeeper Maik Taylor saved well and Bradbury wasted a good opportunity by shooting wide.
Roared on by the crowd, Fulham upped the tempo in a furious late attacking spell and Petterson came into his own with a fine point-blank save from Paul Trollope and an acrobatic leap to deny Kit Symons.
He could do little to prevent Collins' winner, however, and it was no less than Fulham deserved for their perseverance.
