Report by Ben Davis

Two second half goals from John Aloisi and John Durnin gave Pompey a desperately needed victory in their fight to move away from the relegation zone. The pressure on Fenwick would have eased slightly and he will be hoping that this win is a platform which the team can build on in future matches.
Craig Foster was dropped to the substitutes bench with Andy Awford taking his place in an anchor role. In defence Andy Thomson returned from suspension. Sammy Igoe must have been wondering what he has to do to earn a starting place after scoring the equaliser against Midddlesbrough after coming on as sub at the Riverside Stadium.
Indeed Pompey were determined to continue where they left off and thought they had scored after two minutes. Aloisi played a one-two with McLoughlin and the Aussie international slid the ball past Kiely and into the net, but the linesman's flag had already been raised so the goal was disallowed.
Pompey certainly were causing the Bury defence a number of problems with Butler and Lucketti making vital interceptions to keep Aloisi and Durnin out respectively. The visitors then really should have taken the lead after eight minutes. Perrett moped things up at the back and played McLoughlin away down the left, whose cross was left by the Bury defence. Durnin appeared at the far post but somehow managed to tap it wide with an open goal in front of him.
Bury's first attempt at goal came after 15 minutes when Battersby's shot was well blocked by Whitbread. The home side were now beginning to get going and started to give Pompey's defence one or two scares. From Daw's cross Bury's leading scorer Johnson glanced a header wide after he had lost his marker Thomson.
Perrett then did well to stop Johnson as he tried to latch onto a long ball from the back. Alan Knight had to make his first demanding save of the afternoon when he tipped Johnrose's low shot around the post after the midfielder had robbed a bouncing ball off Pethick on the edge of the area.
Three minutes before the break Pompey had another chance to take the lead. From Whitbread's free-kick Perrett headed the ball down towards Durnin whose shot blazed over the bar. The Pompey striker was then brought crashing the floor moments later by Butler who was consequently booked, the first of the afternoon.
Again Pompey started the brighter with Durnin immediately putting Butler under pressure as he chased Thomson's long ball out of defence with the Bury man managing to clear. The Pompey fans who had made the long trip were then celebrating after 52 minutes as their side took the lead.
The busy Durnin picked up Turner's throw before beating two Bury players and slipping McLoughlin in the area. Instead of shooting from a tight angle the Irish international pulled it back for Aloisi to nudge past Kiely. The striker then spoilt his afternoon by receiving a yellow card for a foul on Johnrose. Discipline has been a problem this season for Pompey and Fenwick would not have been happy to see Pethick being booked for dissent.
Pompey were certain they had a penalty when Aloisi darted into the area and was brought down by Woodward but referee Mr Laws decided to give a goal-kick to the annoyance of the Aussie.
Bury though got back into the game and went very close to equalising when from another Daws cross Swan powered a header just wide with Knight well beaten had it gone the other side of the post. Knight needed to be alert to deny Johnson before two goal-line clearances in a matter of seconds rescued Pompey.
From a Bury corner Lucketti got in a header which beat Knight but Awford was there on the line to hook away. Seconds later Perrett had to do likewise after Knight couldn't fully stop Johnson's shot. With ten minutes remaining the dangerous Johnson curled a fine effort inches over as the home fans sensed an equaliser was on the cards.
Yet it could have been all over when Hillier played a brilliant ball through to Aloisi but his control let him down giving Kiely the opportunity to smother the ball. Back Bury came with Whitbread and Pethick making important tackles and it was backs-to-the-wall stuff for Pompey's defence in an attempt to hold onto their precious lead.
However, Pompey sealed it two minutes into stoppage time. Pethick picked up possession and charged down the right before setting Aloisi away. As the Aussie moved into the area he laid it off for Durnin to make the victory certain and send the Pompey fans into delirium.
